Discovering the body and movement as effective means in mitigating the depression--or even beginning to feel "good"

A child of a Muslim Moroccan mother, and an atheist professor of religion for a Pops, Michael had questions about life's mysteries since early childhood. Growing up under the pine and spruce trees of central Maine, watching his mom pray in silence and his Dad devour symbol-laden literature, Michael always wondered big. His beautiful family answered many of these questions through their love, and through a shared passion and pursuit of happiness, art, food, culture and travel.

Finding certain gifts in the arts--music, movies and prose--as well as on the football field, Michael graduated from Orono High in 2001, before moving to Boston to study film at MassArt, that September. And while the fall of the twin towers that month didn't affect him the way it did many others, it did coincide with a complete fall into depression, that first season away from home. Discovering the body and movement as effective means in mitigating the depression--or even beginning to feel "good"--Michael started studying Tai Chi and Yoga in 2002. By 2004, he'd left art school and enrolled at UMass Amherst, where he'd eventually complete a multi-disciplinary major called Mindfulness in Education and Leadership. In '04 Michael also become a teacher in a S. Korean

Taoist Yoga, Healing and Martial Arts practice, which emphasized the development of Ki, or energy, especially in the core of the body, or the second chakra. Through this practice he'd go on to teach all over the US, even for a time in S. Korea. In 2015, Michael completed 10 years teaching in his practice, and decided to begin his own. That year he created MindfulMoves Inc., and opened a small studio in Soho, NYC, overlooking the Hudson River. During this time, Michael organized his system and began leading local and international retreats. He also returned to his passion of film and began documenting these events and the travels he'd begun weaving back into his life. He only stayed in NYC another couple years, before beginning a move west, which he'd dreamed of since childhood. After a time in Arizona, followed by a global circumnavigation, Michael made it to LA, realizing a 30+ year-old-wish. Soon though, this long-awaited era would turn in unfathomable directions, as the Corona Virus silenced the once-singing-city. After 3 life-changing years there, working on a book series that both chronicled his adventures as well as his system of MindfulMoves, Michael moved back to Boston in 2023, to be near his family after many years away. The reunion with loved ones and this town is something that inspires and motivates Michael, a homecoming for both body and soul. He's thrilled with the chance to build community, and support the health and happiness of individuals from all walks of life. He's here to sing his song with love and passion, on the stages of this town, and every Sunday morning in the MOTA training room.
