MK Anderson
(she/they)
Makayla Anderson (artistically known as MK) was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. MK strongly identifies with their West Indian roots and heritage: having a mother born and raised in Jamaica and father – born, raised and currently still residing in Guyana.
MK is a Spoken Word Storyteller and Trauma-Informed Yoga Instructor. Some of their passions consist of dancing, poetry and culinary arts. MK has been dancing since the age of two, solidifying her passion for movement at a very young age.
In conjunction with dance, MK has developed a brand reflecting their passion and purpose within the Wellness Space – in efforts to serve Black, women-identifying individuals. Spoken word has always been a form of release for MK and so she created the brand in which she will be releasing her own written works and future projects.
When it comes to wellness, MK’s passion lies in the mental health and self-discovery/healing journey of Black, women-identifying individuals. On this journey of discovery, self-reflection is really important. MK is passionate about guiding reflective practices and encouraging others to embrace their own journey through being transparent with her own – while utilizing yoga, poetry and other forms of reflection.
MK’s ultimate goal within the wellness world is to continue to be a change-maker, by being the change they want to see. MK is huge on representation and initially became a yoga instructor because she struggled severely to find ones that looked like her. Growing up, words and movement have always been MK’s form of expression and storytelling. With being able to identify the power and impact these two things have on one’s wellness journey – MK essentially aims to share her story and experiences with the word... In hopes that those on the receiving end will be empowered enough to take a deeper dive into their own and embrace all parts. As a yoga instructor and spoken word storyteller, MK seek’s to provide a space that offers multiple different outlets for individuals to build their self-care toolkits. Not all are drawn to yoga and movement, while others are not necessarily drawn to writing, etc. Various forms and outlets work for different people and MK wants to apply their knowledge of the forms that have worked for them, in efforts to guide others on how they can discover the same.
