Cueing for Accessibility & Inclusivity

Lead Instructor: Monia Fernandez Learn More About Her!

What does it mean to be trauma informed? Often the response to this question is to offer practices like restorative yoga, no hands on assists and doing everything possible not to trigger someone. These are wonderful practices to start with if you’re new to teaching yoga, but that barely scratches the surface.

Trauma Informed practices are very complex. During this module we will break down two important pillars (of a very many): accessibility and inclusivity. We will talk about how privilege can be unintentionally modeled through language. We will fully break down why lacking a rich understanding of foundational practices for people with dynamic disabilities can be detrimental to an instructor not versed on how to offer inclusive cueing. We’ll weave in the everlasting presence of intersectionality. How language can build up barriers if cultural identities and marginalized communities aren’t considered. We will shape our conversations around how the trauma of cultural exploitation of yoga actively removes South Asian and Indian people from modern western yoga.

Topics that we will cover in this training:

  • - Able-bodied vs Dynamically Disabled Experiences

    • (Eating disorders, Chronic Pain & --Chronically Ill People, Body Dysmorphia to name a few.)

  • - Intersectional Feminism

  • - White Supremacy Culture and the Presence of Privilege

  • - Decolonization and Trauma

  • - Hierarchy within Societal Structure

  • -The Nervous System in Action

What to bring & wear:

Bring journals to take notes, snacks/lunch, clothes to practice yoga in and be cozy, questions!

What to expect:

Students should expect to listen to lectures from the instructor, move through a few small asana practices in breakout groups, practice cueing and have group conversations. There will be a 30m lunch break at 12p.

Sliding Scale Payment Options:

  • This rate is for people who identify as BIPOC or trans. At the moment we currently do not have anyone on staff that identifies as trans but we would like to help create spaces for wellness and education for the trans community.

  • This rate is our standard rate which sustains our offering for our community. This rate allows us to support our teachers so that they can continue their self studies (Svādhyāya) and education to guide y’all into your wellness education journey.

  • This rate is for those who have the ability to pay more to support the BIPOC & Trans communities, as well as our teaching staff. This rate allows us to offer as many resources as we can to promote longevity in education for our students but also sustain the financial livelihood of MOTA.
