Intro to Street & Club Dance with the Flavor Continues

  • MOTA 11 Bow Street Somerville, MA, 02143 United States (map)

This form is REQUIRED to be filled out before the session. Without it, you cannot attend. There is a max of 8 attendees.

The “Intro to Street & Club Dance” class is a way for newcomers to familiarize themselves with the basics of freestyle dance through the outlets of Street & Club dance forms. This event will occur the last Thursday of every month.

“Freestyle” is an umbrella term referring to dancing utilizing a set of dance foundations combined with your own *flavor and creativity. Foundations vary within each dance form.

*Flavor - individual interpretation of movement

While there are many forms of freestyle dance, our mission specifically focuses on Street and Club dance forms, detailed in the infographics below:

What is Street Dance?
What is Club Dance?

Following this class, we have an open freestyle session in Studio 1. Open Freestyle sessions are special because they can include any dance form of our usual Street & Club dance sessions (Uprock, Breaking, Popping, Waacking, Hip Hop, & House). There is no set genre of music these sessions abide by and music selection for each session is reflective upon which form of dance is in attendance that day. If this particular session was a multiple choice question, it would be the “all of the above” option.

What should the students expect?

Students should expect to learn a brief history and context of a particular Street and/or Club dance form as well as movement basics.

Our classes pipeline into our session spaces where folks can practice with other practitioners of varying levels and experience in a community setting. Contrary to a class, it is perfectly acceptable to arrive at a session late and/or leave early. Think of attending a session in the same way you go to the gym for your own work out.
